Changes With Apple Ranks

In June, Apple changed how many apps receive a category rank in the App Store.

Previously, Apple ranked the top 400 apps in each category. Apple now ranks only the top 250. This change was made by Apple and applies across all countries, categories, and devices.

What changed

Apps that previously ranked between 251 and 400 will no longer have a category rank.

Because of this, you may notice:

  • An app no longer has a rank in certain countries.
  • Ranking graphs stop when an app falls outside the top 250.
  • Rank changes vary by country because an app may rank within the top 250 in one country but outside it in another.

This does not necessarily mean the app experienced a sudden change in performance. In some cases, the rank is no longer available because Apple stopped reporting positions below 200.

How this affects estimates

Category rankings are one of the signals Appfigures uses for estimates.

Because Apple now provides fewer ranking positions, you may see changes in estimates for specific countries. The impact will vary based on where an app ranked in each country before Apple made the change.

This applies across all categories and devices.
