Competitor Keywords

Want to see every keyword your competitors rank for — and compare their ranks to yours? The Competitor Keywords report does exactly that. Add up to 8 apps and instantly see all the organic keywords they rank for, side by side, so you can spot gaps, find new keyword ideas, and understand how you stack up.

This is one of the most powerful keyword discovery tools in Appfigures. Instead of guessing which keywords to target, you can look at what's already working for your competitors and use that to improve your own ASO strategy.

Getting Started

To get to the report, go to Find Keywords → Competitor Keywords in the left sidebar.

The report requires at least one app selected. You can add up to 8 apps to compare keyword ranks side by side. Here are the controls you'll use to set it up:

  • Apps — Use the + Select an app area or the + button to add apps. Each app appears as a card with a three-dot menu that lets you remove the app, remove others, remove to the right, remove to the left, or remove all.
  • Store — Toggle between iOS App Store and Google Play (one at a time). Keyword rankings differ between stores.
  • Country — Choose a country to see keyword rankings for that market. Rankings vary significantly by country.
  • Device — Toggle between iPhone and iPad (iOS) or the equivalent device options for Google Play. Search results differ between devices.

Once your apps are selected, the report loads a keyword table showing every organic keyword those apps rank for. A summary line above the table shows how many total keywords were found (e.g., "Found 3,972 keywords"), and each app's column header shows its individual keyword count.

Data in this report is delayed by 24 hours. For real-time keyword data, use Keyword Inspector or Keyword Performance.

Filters

Above the table, several filters let you narrow down the results:

  • Type — Filter by tracking status. Options: Only keywords I don't track (keywords you're not currently tracking — great for discovering new keywords to add) and Only keywords I track (keywords already in your tracked list).
  • Rank — Filter by position range. Presets: High (1–10), Medium (11–25), Low (≥ 25), or set a Custom range with the slider.
  • Popularity — Filter by popularity score range. Presets: Very High (85–100), High (60–84), Medium (20–59), Low (10–19), Very Low (0–9), or set a Custom range with the slider.
  • Competitiveness — Filter by competitiveness score range. Presets: Very High (85–100), High (60–84), Medium (20–59), Low (10–19), Very Low (0–9), or set a Custom range with the slider.

Use the search bar in the table header to filter keywords by name.

Translate

The Translate feature lets you translate all keywords in the table into any language. This is especially useful when analyzing competitors in foreign markets — you can see exactly what each keyword means without leaving the report.

Column Reference

The table is organized into shared columns plus per-app columns for each selected app.

Keyword

  • Keyword — The keyword one or more of the selected apps ranks for. Each keyword is shown with its country flag. Click any keyword to open it in Keyword Inspector for deeper analysis. A + button next to each keyword lets you quickly add it to your tracked keyword list.

Insights

  • Popularity — A score from 0 to 100 indicating how often users search for this keyword in the App Store. Higher means more search volume. Displayed as a bar chart for easy visual comparison.
  • Competitiveness — A score from 1 to 100 showing how hard it would be to rank for this keyword. Higher means more competition. Also displayed as a bar chart.
  • # Apps — The total number of apps that appear in search results for this keyword.

Per-App Columns

For each app you've selected, the table shows:

  • Rank — The app's current organic rank for this keyword. A dash (–) means the app doesn't rank for that keyword, which is itself a useful insight — it reveals keywords your competitors rank for that you don't.

Actions

Track Keywords

There are two ways to track keywords from this report:

  • + button — Click the green + icon next to any individual keyword to add it to your tracked keyword list instantly.
  • Track selected keywords — Select multiple keywords using the checkboxes on the left, then click Track selected keywords to add them all at once.

App Management

Each app card has a three-dot menu (⋮) with options to manage your app selection:

  • Remove — Remove this app from the comparison.
  • Remove others — Remove all other apps, keeping only this one.
  • Remove to the right — Remove all apps to the right of this one.
  • Remove to the left — Remove all apps to the left of this one.
  • Remove all — Remove all apps from the report.

Export

The Export button gives you several options for getting data out of the report:

  • Download CSV — Download the full table as a CSV file.
  • Download JSON — Download the full table as a JSON file.
  • Copy with newlines — Copy just the keywords, one per line. Great for pasting into other tools.
  • Copy with commas — Copy just the keywords, separated by commas.

What You Can Do With It

  • Discover keywords you're missing — Add a competitor and look for keywords where they rank but you show a dash (–). These are immediate opportunities.
  • Find new keywords to track — Use the Type filter set to "Only keywords I don't track" to find keywords you haven't added to your monitored list yet.
  • Compare rank positions — See how you and your competitors rank for the same keywords. Where they outrank you, there's room to optimize.
  • Identify high-value targets — Sort by Popularity and look for keywords with high search volume where competitors rank well but you don't. These are the keywords worth focusing your ASO efforts on.
  • Research competitor strategy — Seeing all the keywords a competitor ranks for reveals their metadata strategy — what terms they're targeting and where they've invested.
  • Explore international markets — Change the Country filter and use Translate to analyze competitor keyword strategies in other markets.
  • Build your tracked keyword list — Use this report as a keyword discovery engine. Find the best keywords your competitors rank for and add them to your tracked list with one click.

💡 Ariel's Top Tip

🔍 Add your top 2-3 competitors and sort by Popularity (highest first). Then scan the Rank columns — look for keywords where your competitors rank in the top 10 but you show a dash. These are proven, high-traffic keywords that are already working in your category. Add them to your tracked list and start optimizing for them.
